34. Building a Brand That Stands Out + Using Instagram to Grow Your Business with Land & She Studio | Studio 78 Podcast NacheSnow.com

Emily Kelley turned a last-minute trip into the fuel she needed to launch her business, Land & She. Wanting to align her passion with her vocation, Emily used the inspiration and feeling she got from her trip to begin experimenting with sketching and illustration. After some research and trial and error, she cultivated an aesthetic that represented her love for nature and appreciation for other art forms and works.

Emily has amassed quite the following across social media platforms from posting her handmade artwork, and within a few months, her business growth has surpassed her expectations. Emily’s evolution as a maker has only just begun, but based on the amazing work she’s already produced, I’m sure she’ll be a dynamic contributor to the creative space for years to come.

  • From Philadelphia and the owner and maker behind Land & She, which sells art, block-created textiles, journals, and custom goods
  • She’s also a graphic designer who received a BFA in graphic designer from Tyler School of Art in 2014
  • Initially worked for a design agency right out of college
  • Took an unexpected trip to Oregon, stood on the beach and said whatever she does in life has to be tied to what she was feeling in that moment
  • While she had a full-time job, she started sketching and freelancing
  • She discussed how she was lucky to have the support of her family during initial phases of launching her business because it allowed her to quit her full-time job to focus solely on her business
  • Went to the Denver Art Museum and saw a Mithila style painting, which helped influence her design style
  • She experimented with every medium before she decided to focus on block printing
  • Marketing: Started her shop on SquareSpace and started hashtaging things on Instagram; her feature on Design Sponge really helped to get followers on Instagram
  • Instagram tips: Share your work often (people’s interaction with your work will help you come up on their discovery pages); she gave an example of how a process video she posted received 100k views (Etsy also featured it, which helped her gain additional followers)
  • We discuss the impact of having a large Instagram account and how that has affected the number of orders she receives
  • Has started taking wholesale orders
  • Tips for what to focus on for your shop:
    • Photography
    • Naming your item
    • Pricing
  • Emily explains how she determines prices and names for her different products
  • Recently decided to take a 9-to-5 job with an outdoors brand because it aligns with what she’s passionate about and the company does great things for the environment
